"Observation of spin current: theory and experiment" by Shun-Qing Shen at KIAS (Room 1423) on Thu Jun 8, 2006 16:00 |
| Abstract: Spin coherent transport of conduction electrons in semiconductor heterostructures is currently an emerging subject due to its possible application in a new generation of electronic devices. There have been considerable efforts to achieve spin polarized current or pure spin current in semiconductors. Optical injection of spin current is largely based on the fact that the spin polarized carriers in conduction band can be injected in semiconductors via absorption of the circularly or linearly polarized light. While there are successful ways to inject or generate spin current, its detection is still a subtle problem. Despite the optical methods which indicated spin accumulation due to the spin current, it is tempting to probe spin current by measuring its electric effects. In this talk, I will introduce the effect of electric transverse current driven by an optically injected spin current in a two-dimensional electron gas of InGaAs/InAlAs with structure inversion asymmetry. A linearly polarized light pumps electrons from valence to conduction bands, which induces a pure spin current with an in-plane polarization due to the spin orbit coupling. The scattering effect induced by this spin current in a crossbar shaped mesoscopic system is explored, which yields two measurable inward or outward electric transverse currents. I also report recent progress of experimental observation in The University of Hong Kong. |
The "Workshop on Nanoscale and Mesoscopics Systems" is a meeting to promote the information exchange, scientific discussions, and collaborations among scientists working on nanosctures or mesoscopics systems. Since it was first launched in January 1999, it has been held twice a year, each time inviting three or four experts in the field as lecturers. It is intended particularly for lectures rather than seminal talks as in usual conferences so that the partcipants can learn and discuss thoroughly the topics. The topics covered in previous workshops are available here or at the Homepage of the Quantum Transport and Superconductivity Lab. at Postech.
This time, we will discuss the spin Hall effect. Recently, the spin Hall effect in two-dimensional electron (hole) gas with the spin-orbit coupling has attracted remarkable interest. The interest has been intensified even further by the controversies about the finiteness of the spin Hall conductance and its concept itself. The scope of the workshop is to provide the basic introduction to the spin Hall effect and the elementary physical descriptions of it, to address the fundamental issues on the definition of the spin Hall conductance, to review the key theoretical and experimental developements, and to discuss the perspectives of the subject in the future.
