Arrival Instruction:
(Content here is a distilled version of what are already
available in KIAS homepage.
See http://www.kias.re.kr/local/maps.htm
for more detailed instructions.)
Please note that we have a new airport at
Inchon to which all international flights arrive.
This new airport is rather far
away from the city center of Seoul, about 1 hour drive.
Whatever option you take, it is vital that you print out http://www.kias.re.kr/local/driver.htm
and carry it with you, since most likely
you need to take a taxi for the last leg of your travel to
KIAS.
Two types of taxicab co-exist in Seoul,
distinguishable by the color: black v.s. the rest.
Black ones presumably offer better service, but cost exactly twice as much as
the rest.
Unless you want to give impression that you are a tourist, you may want to
avoid
Them.
There are 3 options for travelers.
(1) Take a
“limousine” or bus to Seoul, and
then taxi to KIAS.
“Limousine” simply refers to a comfortable bus with wide seats.
Among buses, a particularly convenient one
is number 602 , which make trips
between the airport and the Cheongryangri
Station, with several stops in between.
The latter station is only 2-3 kilmeters from KIAS, and is
usually crowded with
taxicabs waiting for passengers.
Another is number 605 which stops in
front of a Holiday Inn in Mapo, which is the
very first stop. In fact, get off 605 anywhere once you are in
the city, take a taxi to
KIAS; wherever you get off, you are right
in the middle of old city center.
(2) Bus to Kimpo
Airport and Then Subway+taxi (or by Taxi to KIAS)
If you know Seoul well, and its old airport
at Kimpo, you could take a
coach/bus to Kimpo. About half of the bus
lines stop at Kimpo on its
way to Seoul.
At Kimpo Aitport, take subway line #5
toward the city
Change to subway line #1 at Chongno 3-Ga
(Chongno Sam-Ga) Station
toward Chongno 5-Ga (Chongno O-Ga) Station à
Get off at Cheonryangri Station à
Take a taxi from the Station.
Getting off at Hoegi Station, the next one,
brings you to KIAS within
walking distance, actually. Not a good option for people with heavy
luggages though.
(3) Taxi all the
way
The easiest option is to take a taxicab
from the Airport. Again make sure you
print out http://www.kias.re.kr/local/driver.htm and show it to the cabby.
The cost should be around 50,000 won (about 40 US$), or more under
heavy traffic. Double that if you end up in one of those black variety of
taxicab.
Option (3) is recommendable only if
you arrive early on Sunday when traffic
is light.
